Discover the 5 most common website mistakes and learn how to steer clear of them.
Your website is often the first point of contact between your business and potential customers. It’s a powerful tool for building trust, establishing credibility, and attracting new clients.
However, many people create a website and make common mistakes that can hold them back in their online success.
In this blog post, we’ll explore five of the top website mistakes and provide valuable insights on how to avoid them!
1. Not mobile responsive
Apart from business friends I know very few people that even own a laptop or computer. When I thought about it the other day it astounded me!
My target market is other business owners (and I get more views on desktop) but is yours? With more and more people using mobiles and tablets is your website up to scratch on different devices?
I see so many websites that are totally unreadble on a mobile, so always check across different devices. To do that you can use screenfly.org which will show you your website on different sized devices.
2. No SSL certificate
Now this is a biggy! Google has said for a while that it will stop listing websites that are not secure, and to be honest if you land on someones website and the first thing it tells you is it’s not secure is it really building that trust factor with visitors? An SSL certificate is a non negotionable and you can easily purchase or get one for free from your hosting company. To find out if your website has one type in your website address with https:// at the beginning and if it loads with the little lock in the address bar you are secure!
3. All about you not them
You have around 0.8 seconds from when a visitor lands on your website for them to decide whether or not they want to scroll down. They want to know if you can help them, wasting this valuable space with a big logo, your name or welcome to my website is going not going to convince them that you are the person who can solve their problems. This is the same throughout your branding and copy, make it about your target market, talk to them directly, tell them how you can help them, why they should choose you etc. If you are anything like me I read or see certain things and I feel like they are just talking directly to me and I’m in! Talk to your target market!
4. No calls to action
Now if you are going to go through all that effort in creating a website then you want it to actually do something. Being sat there doing nothing is not really going to cut it, it’s a waste of time and money. So give it a job and then put calls to action at least once on every page to get visitors to achieve that job. Tell them what you want them to do and make it really obvious! Most people hate decisions so make it for them!
5. Too complicated to use
I get you may have a million and one things you want them to do, but let me tell you the click here, click there, find the one thing you want after delving through a menu so deep it may as well be an ocean, is not going to win you over clients any time soon.
Make things as easy as possible, don’t give them multiple options on every page, naturally guide them through your website like it’s a site seeing tour and you want them to take everything in that they need to know so they already feel like your’re the one. Don’t use garish colours, make everything easy to read, get feedback on how easy it is to find things. Just keep it simple!
