10 Most Popular WordPress Questions (and Simple Answers)

WordPress Questions

Do you have lots of WordPress questions? Yes? Maybe you have Googled “how to use WordPress” or “what plugin do I need?”. Don't worry, you are not alone!

I get asked WordPress questions every day by my lovely clients and ladies in my business network. I don't mind at all. I am always happy to help. WordPress is powerful, flexible, and (thankfully) beginner-friendly, but it can feel a little overwhelming when you’re getting started.

Here are the 10 most common WordPress questions I hear from business owners, along with clear, simple answers to help you feel more confident managing your own website.

WordPress Questions - The welcome page for WordPress

1. What is WordPress, and is it free to use?

WordPress is the world’s most popular website builder, powering over 40% of all websites online!

The software itself is completely free, but you’ll need to pay for your domain name and website hosting to make your site live.

A quick tip:

There are two versions of WordPress!

WordPress.com is a hosted platform with limitations.

WordPress.org (the one I use and teach!) gives you full control, flexibility and the ability to grow your site your way.

2. How do I install WordPress?

This is one of the easiest WordPress questions to answer.

Most hosting providers make this super easy with a “one-click install” button.

You’ll usually find it inside your hosting dashboard.

If you prefer to do it manually, you can upload WordPress via FTP and create a database but honestly, the one-click option saves loads of time and tech headaches!

3. What’s the difference between a theme and a plugin?

Your theme controls what your site looks like colours, fonts, and layout.

Your plugins control what your site can do, think contact forms, online shops, pop-ups, SEO tools, and more.

Think of your theme as your outfit and your plugins as your accessories 💃  both matter, but you don’t want to overdo it!

4. How do I make my WordPress site secure?

This is one of the most important WordPress questions I get asked. Security doesn’t have to be scary. Follow these golden rules:

🔒 Keep WordPress, your themes, and plugins up to date
🔒 Use a strong password (and ideally two-factor authentication)
🔒 Install a security plugin like Wordfence or iThemes Security
🔒 Make sure your site has an SSL certificate (the little padlock symbol). Ask your host for more help if you don’t have one.

A few simple steps now will save a lot of stress later.

5. Why is my WordPress site so slow, and how can I speed it up?

A slow website can frustrate visitors and hurt your Google ranking.
The good news? It’s usually an easy fix!

Here’s how to speed things up:
⚡ Choose a quality hosting provider
⚡ Install a caching plugin (like WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache)
⚡ Resize and compress your images before uploading (images are usually the biggest culprits!)
⚡ Deactivate or delete plugins you’re not using

If your site still feels sluggish, it’s worth having a website review to check what’s going on behind the scenes.

6. How do I add a contact form to my site?

You don’t need to be techy for this one!
Install a plugin like Forminator (my fave!), WPForms or Fluent Forms, and you can drag and drop fields to build your form.

Then simply pop the form onto your contact page using a block or shortcode. Easy!

7. How do I improve SEO on my WordPress site?

This is probably the most common of the WordPress questions I get asked. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) helps your ideal clients find you online, and WordPress makes it easy.

Here’s what to focus on:
🌟 Install an SEO plugin like Rank Math
🌟 Use clear titles and headings
🌟 Add alt text to your images
🌟 Keep your website fast and mobile-friendly
🌟 Blog regularly with helpful, keyword-rich content

Remember: SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency is key and it’s not something that can be achieved overnight.

8. How do I update WordPress safely?

Before you hit update — always back up your site first!

Then update in this order:

Plugins
Themes
WordPress core

If something goes wrong, you can quickly restore your backup or if you have access to your hosting you can get a develpper to easily help you out – all is not lost!

Many businesses also use a staging site (a hidden copy of your site) to test updates before going live.

9. How do I add an online store to my WordPress site?

This depends on what you’re selling. You have two brilliant options:

WooCommerce – Perfect for product-based businesses. It’s powerful, flexible, and ideal if you’re selling multiple physical items.

Studiocart – My personal favourite for service-based businesses!
It’s ideal for selling courses, memberships, downloads, or 1:1 sessions, and lets you easily create beautiful checkout pages, upsells, and thank-you pages without needing a huge setup.

Both integrate with Stripe and PayPal, or my favourite Square Pay, so your clients can pay you directly through your website so no more “email me to pay” messages which massively affect your user experience on your site and puts potential buyers off!

10. How do I back up my WordPress website?

Backups are your safety net.

Use a plugin like UpdraftPlus, Backuply, or BlogVault, and set automatic backups to run weekly (or even daily).

Store them somewhere safe like Google Drive or Dropbox, and if anything ever goes wrong — you can restore your site in minutes.
