How to make your website more personal. This is a topic I am regularly asked about, so I thought it might be time to write a blog about it and share my 4 best expert tips.
It is understandable why so many of us ponder this question. When there are a million and one people out there who all do the same as you, how do you stand out? What makes a potential client choose you?
1. Make your website more personal - Like me!
The simple answer is to make your website more personal to you. Let your personality shine through.
OK, so you don't have to dress up as a website fairy godmother (unless you really want to!), but as soon as I started putting my real personality into my website, things started changing in my business.
I always say to clients that yes, you have to give the visitors what they are looking for, but anyone can do that if they are in the same industry as you. It's the YOU in your business that makes it different, put the EXTRA WOW into your website.
2. The About Page
Since I've been creating websites I've always been taught and told that the about page is often the second most visited page on your website. The reason why is easy to see. People buy from people. They want to know who you are, and more importantly, what you can do for them. What makes you different?
The about page is the perfect place to showcase all that. If you make your website more personal, you can shine, sell yourself, and what you do. But remember, it's not all about you. They don't want to know your entire life story; that's not what it's about. It's about how 'you' specifically can solve a problem or provide them with what they want.
Videos are also a good way to make your website more personal, especially if you are better on camera than writing copy. I often find it difficult to get my point across in writing, but I'm good at talking. However, if you are someone who shies away from the camera and you are just nervous, it may not be the best medium for you. You want to show people a confident, real you. So, experiment and find the best medium to get that across.
3. Make you website more personal - Don't be shy!
Lot's of people also shy away from photos on their website but, especially if you are personally providing the service, such as coaching, then people want to see who you are. That's why websites have a 'Meet the Team' section. Visitors and potential clients want to see who they are dealing with before they get in touch. It's a familiarity thing, and it helps them feel connected to you.
So many businesses are faceless. You go on their website and never know the person you are dealing with. Whilst this may be OK for companies like Amazon and other larger organisations, for smaller businesses, people tend to buy from people, so it's important to make your website more personal.
Be sure to have quality, professional photographs taken to add to your website, too. You want them to reflect the professionalism of your business. I used local photographer, Abigail Lewis, for mine, have a search on Google for portrait photographers in your area.
4. Your shop window
Copy is also very important, because it is the message you are trying to convey. Remember, you are still 'virtually' talking to your ideal client, so speak to them as if they were in front of you and you are having a conversation with them. Explain just how you can help them.
It's also good to have a short bio about yourself or the company on the home page with a paragraph or two about how you can help them and why they should choose you.
