Building a website can feel like a huge mountain to climb, but I promise it doesn’t have to be. Let’s break it down into easy, doable steps, so you can go from “I need a website” to “look at my shiny new corner of the internet!” without the tech stress.
Step 1: Get Clear on What You Want Your Website to Do
Before you dive into designs and domain names, pause and ask yourself:
✨ What is the purpose of my website?
- Are you selling services?
- Showing off a portfolio?
- Building an email list?
- Selling products or courses?
- Getting people to book a call with you
Knowing this will help guide everything else — from the design to the content!
💡 Hot tip: You don’t need to have everything figured out. Start simple and grow over time!
Step 2: Pick Your Website Name (Domain Name)
Your domain name is your website’s “address” (like www.myawesomebiz.com).
Choose something that’s:
✔️ Easy to say and spell
✔️ Related to your business name or what you do
✔️ Memorable
💡 Bonus tip: Check that the name isn’t already taken on social media too — it’s great for consistency! As well as making sure that some one else hasn’t got a similar domain that does what you do, it can get messy with intellectual property down the line.
Step 3: Choose Where Your Website Will Live (Hosting)
Hosting is like renting space on the internet for your site and you will need this in addition to a domain name. Some popular and beginner-friendly hosting companies are:
US! We offer budget friendly hosting for £80 per year
Other companies are:
- SiteGround
- Bluehost
- 20i
Many hosting providers will even help you set up WordPress (which brings me to the next step!)
Step 4: Choose a Website Platform
If you’re new to this, WordPress is a fantastic option. It’s flexible, powerful, and you can make it look however you want.
Other user-friendly platforms (which have hosting included but are more costly and restrictive in terms of functionality) are:
Squarespace (great for pretty, simple sites)
Wix (drag-and-drop style)
💡 But WordPress wins if you want to scale later and need lots of functionality!
Step 5: Plan Your Pages
Think about what pages you need. Start with the basics:
Home – First impression of who you are and what you offer
About – Share your story and why you’re awesome
Services/Shop – What you offer and how people can buy
Contact – How people can reach out to you
You don’t need a million pages to start — keep it simple and focused!
Step 6: Design Time!
This is where the fun happens! You can use themes (WordPress has free and paid ones) to get started. Look for something that matches your brand vibe — whether that’s bold and colorful or calm and minimal.
💡 Pro tip: Keep it clean and easy to navigate. Don’t over-clutter! Don’t use millions of colours and fonts, don’t make. it too text heavy and have a play in Canva designing something to see if it will look good first.
Step 7: Add Your Words & Images
Write for real humans (not robots!). Talk like you’re having a friendly chat — share how you help, what you offer, and why people should work with you.
When it comes to images:
Use high-quality photos (avoid blurry selfies)
Stock photos are great, but make sure they fit your vibe
Photos of YOU build trust — so don’t be shy!
Step 8: Check It All Works (Before You Go Live!)
Before launching, give everything a test:
✅ Do all the links work?
✅ Is it mobile-friendly? (People will visit on their phones!)
✅ Are there typos? (Fresh eyes help — ask a friend to check)
Step 9: Go Live and Celebrate! 🎉
Hit publish and get ready to share your website with the world! Post it on social media, email your list, and let everyone know where to find you.
Step 10: Feeling Overwhelmed? You Don’t Have to Do It Alone!
If this still feels like a lot — you don’t have to tackle it solo! I help women just like you get their websites up and running without the tech tears. Whether you want it done for you, or just need a little hand-holding to get through it, I’ve got your back.
We will even set you up with hosting, install WordPress, get it set up for you, add the premium Divi theme and give you access to videos on how to add your content!
